Upcountry Maui refers to the green and lush rural ranch areas along the slopes of Mount Haleakala. Also known as Maui’s best little ranch, Thompson Ranch comprises fourteen hundred acres of undulating pasture area with faraway views extending downslope to the coast four thousand feet below, and further to the ocean beyond. Venturing into a horseback ride on Thompson Ranch gives you an opportunity to witness a side of Maui that only a few people get the opportunity to see, a view of the illustrious ranching history of the island of Maui while offering a chance to explore some deep country at your own pace.

Thompson Road is a single lane road located in Keokea, Maui. It is a great place to take a stroll if you are around Thompson Ranch. Some people are of the view that Thompson Road resembles old Hawaii. This is one of the factors that makes strolls in the area serene and peaceful. Taking a stroll on Thompson Road makes you feel like you are under the clouds. What’s more, the sky is blue and just right. A stroll downhill is most exciting and promises lots of fun. There is no better feeling than when the sun shines on your face while a cool wind breeze blows over you.

For several years, Thompson Road took you to the Thompson Ranch, which at the time was owned by Charlie Thompson. Born to a German tanner and a Hawaiian woman in Kealakekua, Charlie Thompson developed a reputation as a cowboy early on in his life. In 1902, Charlie Thompson relocated to Maui, where he married 3 wives and had several children. In 1969 Charlie Thompson died at the age of 90. Five hundred acres of Charlie’s property were allocated to his wife, four hundred acres were immediately sold, and one hundred acres were allocated to his last wife. After the last wife died, the land was allocated to her children, and fifty acres were sold. Jerry, one of Charli Thompson’s children acquired the remaining fifty acres featuring among other things, a ranch house.…
